Months since we have heard anything from the author and the tool works on less and less sites.. any alternatives that aren't utter shite or any idea what happened to the author?

The best one in my opinion is the NRPG ratiomaster, for the trackers who don't have that strict security, for the others you can always use shumode... The guys from sb-innovation have some updated versions of the RatioMaster and other cool programs but I'm still using nrpg without a problem..
