All Dell PCs have their HDDs mounted vertically so I'm sure its fine. Plus I have heard from friends that you can mount HDDs any way you want; upside down, vertically, diagonally etc.... Just position it whichever way fits best in your case. ;)

I am not so sure how good is vertical positioning, but can say few words about upside down.I had two Seagate Barracudas that died after about 6 months being in upside down position,so you now what not to do.No meter what choice you make,be smart and always do backup copies ;)

Me left it hanging for a few weeks and now got lots of bad sectors...and its these bad sectors and heat that makes the noises

HDD orientation makes NO difference. If you experience problems, the drive is either defective when you bought it, or operating conditions caused it. Heat causes more failures than anything, but electric fluctuation can be just as bad. Bad sectors are usually caused by rough handling of the HDD at some point since manufacture. Since most HDD's are shipped, bad scetors are gonna happen. If a jolt allows the head to touch the platter, there will be damage.....period.
